About Me
Mike Steel is Chelmsford City Cllr for the Broomfield and Walthams ward and Chairman of Great Waltham Parish Council. He has lived in the Chelmsford area for the last 40 years, and currently resides in Great Waltham
Mike Steel moved to the Chelmsford area 41 years ago after completing a degree in Electronic Engineering in Leeds. He joined the Marconi company where he worked for the next 20 years, followed by 20 years at BT. His last role before retiring in 2018, was managing a $1Bn global IT contract for the Pharmaceuticals industry. His background is technology and business and he is a Charted Engineer.
Over the 41 years he has lived in central Chelmsford, Broomfield and latterly Great Waltham. He is well known throughout the constituency – 25 years as a Parish Cllr, 7 years as Chairman, City Cllr, Scout Chairman, and a member of many committees – Twinning, British Legion, Road Traffic, Speedwatch, Parish Productions, Housing Liaison. He is also a qualified first aider and volunteers for many local events.
Mike involves himself in many ECC aspects, being the Superfast Broadband Champion for the area and a Local Highways Panel member. During the 1st wave of Covid-19, Mike and his wife, Joanna, set up a volunteer group registered with Essex Welfare Services and Chelmsford Volunteer Services. He is also a Goodsam responder.
Mike has 3 children all of which attended the local primary and secondary schools, before going on to University and successful careers. He is an active gym user and 3rd Duan karate blackbelt instructor.
